Messiah Men's Basketball Hosts Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Night

The Peyton Walker Foundation (PWF) and Messiah University Men's Basketball teamed up to host Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Night on Wednesday, Jan. 24 during their game against Stevenson University. This was the second consecutive year The PWF has been a part of SCA Awareness Night at Messiah University. This year's theme for the game is "Playing with Heart, Playing for Hearts." The PWF donated an AED cabinet to the Messiah Athletics Department during an informative evening.

Over the past year, the conversations surrounding Sudden Cardiac Arrest have become more prevalent, with high profile athletes such as Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin suffering from SCA last January on Monday Night Football, and more recently, Bronny James, son of NBA star Lebron James, suffering a cardiac arrest just 6 months ago in a workout at the University of Southern California. While many have mistaken these incidents as rare occurrences, statistics combat that notion with SCA currently being the #1 killer of student athletes in the U.S. "Now more than ever the health of our student-athletes needs to be prioritized and it simply starts with awareness," says Julie Walker, Executive Director of The Peyton Walker Foundation. "Many people and specifically athletes feel as if they are invincible, but SCA has shown time and time again that it does not discriminate. It can happen to anyone at any time."
