[Men's Basketball] Second Half Surge Carries Men's Basketball

Doane Men's Basketball accomplished a feat 100 years in the making on Wednesday evening, as they thumped Hastings, 85-48. The 37-point victory was the largest over the Broncos since 1922 when the Tigers won 52-15. The game was one day shy of exactly 100 years with the 1922 game occurring on February 3.The first half was a competitive battle with Doane jumping out early only to have Hastings tie the game at 20-all with 7:15 to play. The Tigers would go on an 11-2 run over the next five minutes to build a nine point lead. They would go into the halftime break with a 32-26 lead.Doane opened the second half with an 11-0 run as Josiah Gardiner (SO/Milford, Neb.) scored six points in the stretch. A Bronco bucket snapped the initial run, however, Doane continued to find offensive success with an additional 7-0 run. Hastings picked up their second basket of the half at the 15:34 mark and Doane followed with another run of 10-0. Over the opening 8:16 of play in the second half, the Tigers outscored Hastings, 28-4, to take a 30-point lead.The teams would exchange points over the next eight minutes as Doane led by 29 with 3:28 to go in the game. The Tigers bench would get in on a run as they closed the game with an 8-0 advantage with Sheldon Cooper scoring four of the points. Max Masin (SR/Ponca, Neb.) put an exclamation mark on the Tiger win by blocking the final shot attempt by the Broncos.For the game, Gardiner led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting and added seven rebounds. Anthony Laravie (SR/Omaha, Neb.) added 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Alec Oberhauser (SR/Parkersburg, Iowa) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Gardiner had team-highs with three assists and two blocked shots.Hastings received 22 points from Karson Gansebom. He was the only player to reach double-figures.Doane returns home to take on (RV) Northwestern on Saturday, February 5, at 3:45 PM. The Red Raiders are one game ahead of the Tigers in the conference standings and won the first meeting in November by 14 points.
