[Men's Basketball] Oberhauser Scores 38; MBB Falls in Overtime

Doane Men's Basketball participated in one of the more thrilling games of the season but unfortunately came out on the short end of an 84-83 loss to Northwestern in overtime on Saturday. The game was tied on four occasions during the opening 10:30 of play with the Tigers never trailing in the opening half. Doane hit six 3-point baskets in the first half as they held a 37-32 lead at the break. The largest lead in the half was seven points, 25-18, with 5:14 to play following a Jaxon Harre (SR/Omaha, Neb.) 3-pointer.A back-and-forth second half battle ensued as the score was tied on eight occasions with five lead changes. Northwestern took their first lead of the game on a three-point play to go in front 42-41. On the next Tiger possession, Alec Oberhauser (SR/Parkersburg, Iowa) converted his own three-point play to put Doane back on top.  The Red Raiders answered with five straight points to regain the lead. It was quickly taken back by the Tigers with an 8-0 run behind two 3-point baskets from Joe Burt (SR/Lincoln, Neb.).Northwestern tied the game at 52-all with 12:57 to play in regulation. A three-point play from Oberhauser followed by baskets from Josiah Gardiner (SO/Milford, Neb.) and Brady Timm (FR/Yutan, Neb.) gave Doane a seven-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Northwestern cut the lead to one point on a couple of occasions only to have Doane push the lead back to at least four points each time. Leading 68-64 with 3:21 to play, Doane would find themselves going scoreless over the next three minutes as Northwestern used a 9-0 run to take a five-point lead with 35 seconds to go. Oberhauser hit a 3-point basket with 20 seconds left to cut the lead to two. Having to foul, the Tigers sent Trent Hilbrands to the free throw line with 11 seconds left. He made his first but missed the second attempt, giving Doane a chance. Anthony Laravie (SR/Omaha, Neb.) attacked towards the basket and then kicked out to Oberhauser who knocked down a 3-point basket as time expired to tie the game.In the extra period, Doane used a 9-2 run to take a seven-point lead with 1:33 to play. Northwestern would go on an 8-0 run to take the lead with 13 seconds to play. Doane's final shot attempt hit the front of the iron, falling short as the Red Raiders escaped with the win.Oberhauser led all scorers with a career-high 38 points while pulling in 16 rebounds. He was 14-of-24 from the floor, hitting five 3-point baskets. Timm added 13 points with Gardiner finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds.Next up for the Tigers is a meeting with Concordia on Wednesday, February 9, at 7:45 PM in Crete.
