Hayes Makes History in Comeback Win at Portland

San Diego men's basketball (11-10, 1-5 WCC) on Tuesday night used a historic performance from PJ Hayes to earn a remarkable comeback win on the road, erasing a 14-point deficit to beat Portland (7-13, 1-4 WCC) by a 85-81 margin as the junior guard drilled a program-record nine threes at the Chiles Center. Hayes was 9-for-15 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 from the free throw line against the Pilots as he racked up a career-high 33 points. His nine three-pointers on Tuesday surpassed the previous San Diego single-game record of eight, set by USD all-time leading scorer Johnny Dee against Maine on December 10, 2011. The Toreros were down 26-12 midway through the first half but rallied to tie the score at 37-37 before taking a 40-38 advantage into the intermission. USD fell back behind as the second half got underway and trailed for the first 12:39 of the final period before rallying twice to force a pair of ties at 67-67 and 70-70. Clutch threes and free throws down the stretch put and kept San Diego back in front for good.
